Allow me a moment or two to geek out. But, from a design stand point, the Scifi channel (now Syfy)'s new logo fails.
And fails big time.
The scifi channel is all about fantasy (and yes, ECW wrestling, but that's a whole other can of worms.)
Fantasy movies, interviews, shows, etc, etc. The original logo was a little outdated with the text, but the planet in it gave it a very fun, surreal feel.
This new logo is white, sans serif, and even the spelling has changed. It's like they have gone from 0-80 in the entirely wrong direction.
Let's start with the color.
White. Why white? White is a very modern, industrial color. White does not give off feelings of fantasy and the supernatural. It is just a very, very bland generic thing to have done.
The font. Big, blocky, sans-serif font? Again, this does not seem to fit within the element of other worldly. It's too crisp and clean cut to give off an inkling of fun.
The name change, Syfy. Are you kidding me? It doesn't even read (scifi), it's more like "siffy". It's like they tried to get down with the kids and the internet lingo like a 40 year old balding dad drinking beer with his teenagers. It just does not work!!!
Why the old logo worked:
The inclusion of the planet in the logo is very fun. After all, this is the scifi channel, and different is what its all about. Different, edgy, fantasy. This is what you want your audience to see and feel. The font needed to be updated, and perhaps a re-imagining of the planet in the logo, but it did not need a total makeover, and I just think Scifi is completely wrong in this.
Am I lead to believe the designers at Scifi are THIS uncreative? Fix this, SCIFI, fix this now!
